Taking the decision to buy  a new kitchen is exciting – and a little daunting too! There are a myriad of things to consider and decide on, from the colour scheme, style and layout.

When you’re buying a new kitchen you’re making a financial investment which will inevitably increase the value of your home. It’s an investment that has to last for many years, for practical purposes as well as being sustainable as far as décor goes, so you want the best you can get for your money.

Home Inspirations have been in the kitchen fitting business for more than 30 years, so we feel experienced enough to share some tips with you to help you on your way to achieving your dream kitchen.

Structural Work

If you’re planning to add a kitchen extension to your property or enlarging an existing kitchen by internal remodelling it is worth consulting your kitchen designer prior finalising any structural plans.

Having a good idea of the area required to achieve your dream kitchen is imperative at this time.

Minor building works i.e removing internal walls, can be undertaken by Home Inspirations  along with plastering ,electrical work, plumbing, tiling and decoration.

Kitchen Design Trends

Even before you set a budget or choose a kitchen supplier and installer, wise up on the latest kitchen design trends. Do some research on the internet and interior design magazines to get an idea of the style of kitchen you prefer. Visit our showroom in Devizes, or if that’s not possible see our Home Inspirations online project page, and/or browse the collections of our suppliers Kitchen Stori for great ideas.

Kitchen Cost Estimates

Once you have narrowed down the sort of kitchen you want, it’s time to set a budget and explore some cost estimates.

It’s a mistake to snap up a bargain kitchen deal at first sight because not only will it probably be low quality and standardised with very few style options, but you’ll likely be faced with a bill for a host of hidden “extras” over and above the quoted “special offer” price. It’s preferable to choose a reputable, local, well-established kitchen fitting company that quotes “all inclusive” detailed prices. That way you know exactly what the cost will be and what you’re getting for your money. Make a point of finding out exactly what is included in the estimate, from the flooring to the lighting, appliances to plumbing, handles to hob. Also ascertain what is NOT included, which you will have to factor in as added costs.

Choosing a Kitchen Company

When you’re deliberating on a kitchen supplier and fitter make sure you ask to see testimonials and pictures of completed projects – even better an actual kitchen installation in the flesh. Don’t be afraid to ask questions such as: How long have you been in business? Who are your suppliers? Do you offer any guarantees? What qualifications and experience do your kitchen fitters have? It’s also good not to make up your mind immediately – a new kitchen is a big project so it’s worth “sleeping on it” to feel confident you are making the best choice. A good company will not pressure you for a decision. Independent kitchen companies offer a more personal professional and accurate service compared to the national companies.

Compromise and Collaborate

When it comes to layout and design you need to be realistic. The kitchen must fit into your available space and budget. This is where it is important to be able to put your trust in professional design consultants who’ll be able to take your wishes and ideas and make them work in your property. Be willing to compromise and collaborate with your kitchen designer to achieve a great result with optimal use of space.

Fresh & New or Freshened Up

When you plan your new kitchen consider whether you actually do need to change all the appliances you had in the old one. Keeping them may reduce the cost, but could impact the aesthetics of the new kitchen. The same goes for window dressings and other décor elements like light fittings. Do you want a total fresh new kitchen, or just a revamp, and is it worth the cost difference not to go the whole nine yards?

When you are confident you have put your new kitchen into tried and trusted good hands, you can actually enjoy the kitchen transformation experience as you get stuck in to the “fun” bits, like choosing the colour of the worktops and pattern of the wall tiles.
